چکیده

Interim Reports on work of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis receive only limited review. Views or opinions expressed herein do not necessarily represent those of the Institute, its National Member Organizations, or other organizations supporting the work. Abstract Modeling earthquakes plays an important role in investigation of different aspects of seismic risk. The paper continues previous studies and describes the user-friendly software destined for numerical simulation of lithosphere dynamics and seismicity by means of different modifications of the block model, which exploits the hierarchical block structure of the lithosphere. As a result, the model produces an earthquake catalog, and the programs give an opportunity to visualize it in different ways. The programs work in an interactive mode with a window interface. Numerical approximation of the Vrancea seismic region is considered as an example of application of the software. Parallel algorithms allowing to perform modeling dynamics of rather large structures are outlined. iv Acknowledgments The described software destined for numerical simulation of lithosphere dynamics appeared as a result of a planned activity within the framework of the IIASA Risk Modeling and Society (RMS) Project. The work has been integrated with RMS studies in modeling natural catastrophes and analyzing insurance strategies. The authors are thankful to Joanne Linnerooth-Bayer and Yuri Ermoliev for fruitful discussions.

Interim Report IR - 01 - 066 Risk Management : Modeling and Computer Applications

The necessity of catastrophe modeling is stipulated both by the essential increase of losses due to recent natural and man-caused hazards and by the lack of reliable real observation data. Earthquakes are considered as an example of unpredictable catastrophic events of a great destructive force. A brief overview of different approaches to mathematical modeling of lithosphere dynamics is present...

Macroeconomic Earthquakes †

In the common jargon used by non-specialist commentators in newspapers or TV programs, business cycle downturns are sometimes described in terms of economic collapses, crashes or even earthquakes. Does these comparisons make any sense but for literary license? In particular, are economic recessions and recoveries governed at large by the same statistical law underlying earthquakes' occurrence? ...

A Portable 3-Dimensional Digitizer for Computer Graphics 3D Modeling

This project created a portable three-dimensional digitizer for computer graphics 3D modeling. It started from reviewing literature then constructed a digitizer, developed applications programs, created experiments and analyzed. The process of the machine started from reading pulse train of the arm rotation via Rotary Encoder at each joint. Next, it was processed by microcontroller and sent the...

hypoDD -- A Program to Compute Double-Difference Hypocenter Locations

HypoDD is a Fortran computer program package for relocating earthquakes with the double-difference algorithm of Waldhauser and Ellsworth (2000). This document provides a brief introduction into how to run and use the programs ph2dt and hypoDD to compute double-difference (DD) hypocenter locations. It gives a short overview of the DD technique, discusses the data preprocessing using ph2dt, and l...

“Remote Earthquakes”: Getting Serious about Authenticity in CSCL

The discovery or re-construction of scientific explanations and understanding based on experience is a complex process, for which school learning often uses shortcuts. Based on the example of analyzing real seismic measurements, we propose a computer-facilitated collaborative learning scenario, which meets many of the requirements for authentic learning. The implementation of the learning envir...
